She finds joy in little things
Laughing at a silly face
Showing tiny teeth that give us wings
She giggles as I giggle back
Peeking out a too-big hat and then
Crying when daddy doesnt want
Her playing with an uncapped pen
Fists grasping up for attention now
Wanting to be held up high
Kissing me, hand on my cheek
I kiss her back as I say good-night
The sky seems bigger here
The horizons are farther apart
And I could almost shed a tear
The way it touches my heart.
A mother calls her children in.
Its getting too dark out now
And birds above fly to win
The race back to the tree bough.
The grass is greener in these fields,
Each blade a shade beautifully bright
But the colour cant help but yield
To the suns disappearing light.
Silhouettes of swaying trees behind
The house with barking dogs
Set against a diamond sky, theyre lined
By tire tracks and fire logs.
The potholes on the road shine smooth
With muddy water from afternoon rain.
